His father Gurunath Sharma who is a caretaker in a transport company. Rohit was raised in Borivali along with his grandfather and uncle. Because his father's income was very low. He also has a younger brother named Vishal Sharma. Rohit started playing in a cricket camp in 1999 with his uncle. Rohit's coach at that time was Dinesh Lad. Dinesh Lad changed his school to Rohit and come to Swami Vivekananda International School. At that time Rohit did not get a chance to attend school. Then Rohit also demanded for scholarship. Rohit started his career with an off-spinner. रोहित शर्मा ने शुरुआत में कुछ खास प्रदर्शन नहीं दिखाया। लेकिन आखिरकार रोहित ने अच्छा प्रदर्शन करते हुए 20 दिसम्बर 2007 को विश्व टी20 कप में दक्षिण अफ्रीका के खिलाफ 40 गेंदों में 60 रन बनाए। उस मैच में भारत को जीत मिली थी। जिसके कारण भरत सेमीफाइनल में पहुंचा था। और भारत सेमीफाइनल जीतकर फाइनल में पाकिस्तान से भिड़ा जहां पर रोहित शर्मा ने 16 गेंदों में 30 रन बनाए। भारत ने वो फाइनल जीतकर इतिहास रचा था। 
18 नवम्बर 2007 को एक दिवसीय मुकाबले में राजस्थान के जयपुर में सवाई मानसिंह स्टेडियम में अपना पहला अर्ध शतक पाकिस्तान के खिलाफ लगाया था। बाद में ऑस्ट्रेलिया में हुई कॉमनवेल्थ बैंक श्रंखला में रोहित ने 33.67 की औसत से कुल दो अर्ध शतक की मदद से 234 रन बनाए। यह श्रंखला रोहित के लिए बहुत अच्छी रही थी। उसके बाद रोहित के एक दिवसीय मुकाबले में कठिनाइयो का सामना करना पड़ा था। दिसम्बर 2009 में रोहित शर्मा ने रणजी ट्रॉफी के एक मैच में तिहरा सतक लगाया और चयनकर्ता को सोचने पर मजबूर कर दिया था। 
रोहित शर्मा ने अपना पहला वनडे शतक 28 मई 2010 को जिम्बाब्वे के खिलाफ लगाया था। जिसमें रोहित ने 114 रन बनाए थे। फिर साल 2011 में वर्ल्ड कप भारत में होना था। भारतीय टीम का ऐलान हुआ जिसमें रोहित शर्मा का नाम नहीं था। लेकिन रोहित शर्मा को आईपीएल 2011 के बाद वेस्ट इंडीज दौरे पर मौका मिला। रोहित उस में ज्यादा कुछ नहीं कर पाए। 
साल 2013 चैंपियन ट्रॉफी यह वो वक़्त था जब रोहित शर्मा के क्रिकेटिंग करियर में बदलाव आया। रोहित शर्मा ने भारतीय एकदिवसीय टीम के लिए ओपनिंग करने की शुरुआत की। एमएस धोनी की कप्तानी में रोहित को पहली बार ओपनिंग करने का मौका मिला। रोहित ने बतौर ओपनर काफी अच्छा काम किया। उसके बाद ऑस्ट्रेलिया भारत आयी हुई थी। उस  सीरीज में रोहित जयपुर में 141 रन बनाए थे। लेकिन बैंगलोर मैच में रोहित ने 2001 रन बनाकर इतिहास बनाया। और फिर अकेले एक मैच में 16 छक्के मार कर शे वाटसन का 14 छक्कों का रेकॉर्ड तोड़ दिया। 
नवम्बर 2013 को सचिन की विदाई वाली टेस्ट सीरिज में रोहित को मौका मिला। जिसमें रोहित ने 177 रन बनाए और दूसरे सबसे सफल खिलाड़ि बन गए जिन्होंने पहले टेस्ट में शतक लगाया हो। रोहित शर्मा एक बेहतरीन वन डे खिलाड़ी बनकर सामने आए। रोहित शर्मा ने एक दिवसीय मुकाबलो में सबसे ज्यादा दोहरे शतक लगाने का रेकॉर्ड अपने नाम किया है। एक ऑस्ट्रेलिया और दो दोहरे शतक श्री लंका के खिलाफ अलग अलग श्रंखला में लगाए है। रोहित शर्मा के लिए 2019 का साल सबसे अच्छा साबित हुआ। जहां रोहित ने इंग्लैंड में वर्ल्ड कप में सबसे ज्यादा 5 शतक लगाए। वर्ल्ड कप में भारत सेमी फाइनल तक पहुंच पाया। सेमीफाइनल में न्यू जीलैंड के खिलाफ हारकर टूर्नामेंट से बाहर हो गया। रोहित शर्मा ने कई मोको पर भारत को जीत दिलाई है। रोहित शर्मा को आज के दौर में सबसे अच्छा ओपनर माना जाता है।

रोहित शर्मा अपने पहले आईपीएल में डेक्कन चार्जर कि तरफ से खेले थे। साल 2009 में डेक्कन चार्जर्स की टीम चैंपियन बनी। साल 2011 में रोहित को मुंबई इंडियंस ने अपनी टीम में सामिल किया। उस आईपीएल में रोहित ने 33.81 की औसत से 372 रन बनाए। बाद में 2012 में रोहित शर्मा ने मुंबई की तरफ से खेलते हुए अपना पहला आईपीएल शतक लगाया। 2012 में मुंबई की टीम आईपीएल में टॉप 4 में पहुंची , मगर फाइनल तक नहीं पहुच सकी। साल 2013 में मुंबई इंडियंस के कप्तान रिकी पोंटिंग का फॉर्म खराब चल रहा था। तब रोहित शर्मा को टीम का कप्तान बनाया गया। रोहित की कप्तानी में मुंबई इंडियंस की टीम बपहली बार चैंपियन बनी। उसके बाद साल 2015,2017 और 2019 में रोहित शर्मा की कप्तानी में मुंबई आईपीएल चैंपियन बनी। आईपीएल में रोहित ने सबसे ज्यादा 4 आईपीएल ट्रॉफी अपने नाम की है। रोहित आईपीएल के सबसे सफल कप्तानों में से एक है। रोहित शर्मा आईपीएल इतिहास में सबसे ज्यादा रन बनाने के मामले में 4 स्थान पर है।
